The working salt pans at the head of the Gulf of Kalloni are the single best-known birdwatching site on Lesbos, with greater flamingo among the regular birds. OSM maps four purpose-built hides around the pans, two of them signed as Lesvos Geopark observatories. The island as a whole has 331 recorded bird species out of 455 recorded in Greece.
