Nachtleben · Monastiraki
Rooftop cocktail bar above the flea-market end of Ifestou, looking straight at the Acropolis. Open from morning until roughly 03:00, later at weekends. Cocktail prices sit somewhat below the hotel roofs; the room is plainer for it.

Nachtleben · Monastiraki
Hotel rooftop bar at Miaouli 2 above Monastiraki square, reached by lift to the sixth floor. Direct view over the square to the Acropolis; open from morning through to the early hours. Busy at sunset — go early or expect to wait for a rail-side table.
Aktivitäten · Acropolis
Gates open at 08:00; the site runs 08:00–20:00 from 1 April to 31 October and 08:00–17:00 from 1 November to 31 March. Entry is by timed slot with a daily cap of 20,000 visitors, and the 08:00–09:00 hour carries the largest quota, so the first slot is both the coolest and the least crowded. Since the April 2025 price reform the standard ticket is €30 year-round, sold through the state site hhticket.gr.

Museen · Makrygianni
Opened in 2009 in a Bernard Tschumi and Michalis Fotiadis building at Dionysiou Areopagitou 15, holding the finds from the Acropolis and its slopes. The top-floor Parthenon Gallery is oriented to the rock itself and glass floors show the excavated ancient neighbourhood beneath the building.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Acropolis
The fortified limestone citadel above the city, carrying the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike and Propylaea, most of them built in the second half of the 5th century BC. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and entry is by timed-slot ticket booked in advance through the Ministry of Culture's platform; the daily visitor number is capped.

Tagesausflüge · Saronic Gulf
The closest Saronic island to Piraeus at 87.41 km², about 40 minutes by hydrofoil or an hour by conventional ferry. The Temple of Aphaia, built around 490 BC, is one of the oldest surviving Greek temples. Pistachios, introduced in 1896, cover a large share of the island's farmland and hold PDO status since 1996; Aegina town is the port and capital, with Perdika and Vathy as smaller settlements.

Tagesausflüge · Saronic Gulf
The smallest of the accessible Saronic islands at 13.37 km² with 1,131 residents at the 2021 census. Skala is the main port with most of the accommodation, Megalochori (Milos) is where most islanders live and Limenaria sits on the far side. Boats from Piraeus take about an hour; from Aegina it is roughly ten minutes by the Agistri Express or a water taxi.

Parks & Grün · Galatsi
A large hillside grove between Galatsi and Kypseli on the slopes of Tourkovounia, with pine cover, playgrounds, football pitches, a skate park and walking paths. Its 2,000-seat open-air Veikou Theatre runs concerts and performances in summer. Essentially a neighbourhood park — no tourism infrastructure, and easiest to reach by bus or taxi.

Nachtleben · Exarcheia
Small basement rock club at Solomou 13-15 in Exarcheia, a fixture of the Athens underground for decades. Punk, hardcore, metal and experimental bills; shows were confirmed into September 2026.

Stadtteile · Plaka
A pocket of about 40 whitewashed Cycladic-style houses built into the rock directly under the Acropolis by 19th-century builders from the island of Anafi. It is residential, reached only on foot by narrow stepped lanes, and takes twenty minutes to walk through.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Monastiraki
The civic and commercial centre of classical Athens, north-west of the Acropolis, containing the Temple of Hephaestus, the rebuilt Stoa of Attalos and the Panathenaic Way. A three-million-euro accessibility and visitor-facilities upgrade ran from 2023 and was inaugurated on 29 July 2026; since 1 July 2025 entry has been through the gate on Thiseio Square.
Tagesausflüge · Corinthia
The Roman-era forum of Corinth is dominated by the mid-6th-century BC Doric Temple of Apollo, of whose 38 columns seven still stand, with an archaeological museum on site; the modern town lies about 5 km north-east. Above it, Acrocorinth is a monolithic rock crowned by three circuit walls, its summit once holding a temple of Aphrodite later used as a church and then a mosque. The suburban railway (Proastiakos) reaches Corinth from Athens, with a local connection or taxi for the last few kilometres.

Nachtleben · Monastiraki
Sixth-floor rooftop at Kirykeiou 6 in Monastiraki, in a preserved older building, with an indoor lounge and a planted terrace looking from Lycabettus round to the Acropolis. 1960s-referencing design, Italian-leaning food, cocktails; open from late morning to around 02:00, from 16:00 on Wednesdays.

Parks & Grün · Ilion (West Attica)
The largest park in Attica, in Ilion in the western suburbs, built on the former Pyrgos Vasilissis estate. Woodland, orchards and six interconnected artificial lakes and wetlands support well over 100 bird species, alongside paths, cycling routes and an environmental education centre. Visitor reviews consistently describe patchy maintenance and limited facilities; getting there means bus or car rather than metro.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Plaka
A marble gateway of AD 131 or 132 standing on Vasilissis Amalias Avenue between Plaka and the Olympieion. Its two inscriptions name the north-west side as the city of Theseus and the south-east side as the city of Hadrian.

The €30 five-day ticket covering the Acropolis plus Hadrian's Library, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Agora, Kerameikos, the Olympieion and Aristotle's Lyceum was abolished on 1 April 2025 and no state replacement exists for Athens. Sites are now priced individually in five bands by visitor numbers — €20, €15, €10 or €5 — with the Acropolis at €30, Ancient Agora and Olympieion €20, Roman Agora, Hadrian's Library and Kerameikos €10, and the Lyceum €5. Seasonal summer and winter pricing was scrapped in the same reform. Combined tickets survive only at Olympia, Delphi, Mycenae and Aigai; anything sold as an 'Athens combo pass' is now a commercial reseller bundle, not a state ticket.

Parks & Grün · Mets
A low pine-covered hill immediately behind the Panathenaic Stadium, between Mets and the Zappeion. A short circular path climbs from the back of the stadium to a viewpoint over the marble seating, the Acropolis and Lycabettus. Unmanaged, free, rarely crowded and popular with dog walkers.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Plaka
A bare rock outcrop just below the west entrance of the Acropolis, seat of the ancient council that judged homicide and religious cases. Acts 17 places the Apostle Paul's address to the Athenians here; a bronze plaque with the text is fixed at the foot of the rock.
Praktisches · Spata, East Attica
ATH sits about 20 km east of central Athens, 30 km by road, with a main terminal (Hall A non-Schengen, Hall B Schengen and domestic) and a satellite terminal reached by an underground link. Metro Line 3 runs directly into the airport but only every 36 minutes, first train 06:10 and last 23:34 from the airport, roughly 40 minutes to Syntagma or Monastiraki. The airport fare is €9 one way, €16 return valid 30 days, €4.50 reduced; a standard €1.20 ticket will not open the gates at the airport station.

Museen · Syntagma
Housed at Paparigopoulou 5-7 on Klafthmonos Square, in the mansion that served as the first royal residence of King Otto and Queen Amalia in the 1830s. The rooms are furnished as period interiors and the collection, largely assembled by Lambros Eutaxias, documents Athens as it grew into a capital; closed Tuesdays.
Aktivitäten · Gazi / Kerameikos
An annual digital and new-media arts festival held each spring at Technopolis in Gazi. The 22nd edition, themed MetaMorphosis, ran 23–26 April 2026 and showed 348 works across 12 categories to more than 12,000 visitors. It is a four-day event, so it is only relevant if a visit falls in late April.

Line 1 (green) runs Piraeus to Kifissia and is the one to take for the port and Monastiraki; Line 2 (red) and Line 3 (blue) cross at Syntagma and Omonia, with Line 3 continuing to the airport on a separate fare. Lines 2 and 3 run until about 02:00 on Fridays and all night on Saturdays, as part of a 24-hour Saturday operation covering metro lines 2 and 3, trams T6 and T7 and eleven extra bus routes. Line 4 is under construction beneath Akadimias, Alexandras, Kolonaki, Exarcheia and Zografou with an opening target around 2032, so expect long-running street works on those corridors.

A summer festival that puts free screens in archaeological parks, courtyards and pedestrianised streets across the city. The 16th edition ran from 6 July to 26 August 2026; admission to all screenings is free and seating is first-come, first-served. It is over for 2026, so it only applies to visits in July and August.
Aktivitäten · Athens Riviera
The coast from Palaio Faliro south to Varkiza mixes free public stretches with pay-entry organised beaches. 2026 entry prices: Astir Beach in Vouliagmeni €50 weekdays and €80 weekends (umbrella zones cost more), Akti Vouliagmenis €10–€15, A' Plaz Voulas €8.50–€10, Varkiza Resort roughly €5–€12 depending on season. Tram line T7 runs the length of the coast from central Athens to Asklipiio Voulas.
Parks & Grün · Athens Riviera
The continuous walking and cycling route along the southern coast, currently usable in good stretches from Faliro past Flisvos and Alimos to Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni, running alongside the T7 tram for much of the way. A state-backed project is unifying it into a single 22 km pedestrian and cycle corridor from Kallithea to Vari-Voula-Vouliagmeni, ultimately intended to reach 70 km from Piraeus to Cape Sounio; as of 2026 quality still varies section by section and some links are interrupted.

On extreme-heat days the Culture Ministry closes the Acropolis and other open archaeological sites during the hottest hours, typically 12:00 to 17:00, and outdoor work is restricted; this happened repeatedly through 2024 and 2025, with July 2025 seeing 43°C and four consecutive days of midday closure. There is no published temperature threshold — the decision is made day by day and announced that morning, so a timed ticket for an afternoon slot can be voided at short notice. Plan the Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Kerameikos and Sounion for the first slot after opening or the last two hours before closing.

Athens tap water comes from the Mornos, Evinos and Marathon reservoirs and is treated by EYDAP through coagulation, sedimentation, sand filtration and chlorination, meeting EU drinking water standards; it is safe to drink straight from the tap across the city. This does not generalise to the islands, where many supplies are desalinated or drawn from limited groundwater and bottled water is the norm — Santorini is a standard example. On a day trip from Athens, fill up before you leave.

Greek law requires ride-hailing vehicles to be licensed taxis, so UberX has been unavailable since 2018: booking an Uber or FreeNow in Athens summons a standard yellow taxi charging the regulated meter rate, plus the app's booking fee. Airport journeys to the central Athens ring are on a fixed tariff of €40 between 05:00 and midnight and €55 from midnight to 05:00, including tolls and luggage. Taximeters are sealed and the driver cannot legally charge above the meter; the rank is at Exit 3 on the Arrivals level, staffed around the clock.

Two lines: T6 from Pikrodafni to Syntagma via Neos Kosmos and Fix, about 35 minutes end to end, and T7 from Asklipiio Voulas along the coast to Akti Posidonos in Piraeus, about 59 minutes over 31 stops. T7 is the useful one for the Riviera beaches at Palaio Faliro, Glyfada, Voula and the SEF stop for Karaiskakis Stadium. Both lines run roughly 05:30 to 00:30 and operate 24 hours on Saturdays at 25-minute intervals overnight.

Since 15 January 2025 you can also just tap a contactless bank card or phone at the validator, with a daily cap of €4.10 however many journeys you make.

Parks & Grün · Spata (East Attica)

It closed to the public on 14 October 2024 for a redisplay originally announced as about ten months and was still reported closed a year later, so check before travelling.

Museen · Gazi / Kerameikos
The Benaki Museum's temporary-exhibition annexe at Pireos 138 and Androniku, a converted industrial building used for contemporary art, photography, architecture and design shows. It opens Thursday to Sunday with late hours on Friday and Saturday, and closes entirely for part of the summer.

Tagesausflüge · Sounio, East Attica
A Doric temple of 444–440 BC on a headland about 60 m above the sea, 69.5 km south-east of Athens and 8 km south of Lavrio; 15 of the original 34 columns still stand. Byron's name is carved into a column base, though there is no direct evidence he cut it himself. Entry has been €10 since the April 2025 national price reform; KTEL Attikis buses leave from Mavromateon Street at Pedion tou Areos and take around two hours.
Nachtleben · Plaka
Rooftop open-air cinema at Kydathinaion 22 in Plaka, with the Acropolis behind the screen. The 2026 season opened on 23 April and was still running two screenings a night in September, typically from 19:30. Deckchairs, a bar, and aircraft overhead.

An 11th-century monastery on the ancient Sacred Way about 10 km north-west of the centre, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1990 for its Middle Byzantine mosaics, including the Christ Pantocrator in the dome. It was badly damaged in the 1999 earthquake and reopened after roughly two decades of restoration; admission is free and it is closed on Tuesdays.

Tagesausflüge · Phocis (long day trip)
The sanctuary of Apollo on the slopes of Parnassos, with the temple, theatre, stadium, treasuries, the polygonal wall of manumission inscriptions, and the separate Athena Pronaia sanctuary with its tholos about 800 m along the road. The archaeological museum holds the bronze Charioteer. Entry is €20 and Delphi is one of the few sites that still has a combined site-and-museum ticket; KTEL Fokidas buses run about four times a day from the Liosion terminal, roughly three hours each way.
Essen & Trinken · Kallithea / SNFCC
The only two-star restaurant in Greece, on the fifth floor of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre in Kallithea, and also holder of a Michelin Green Star for sustainability. Tasting menus, booked well ahead through the restaurant's own site.
Aktivitäten · Makrygianni / Thiseio
A wide marble-and-stone pedestrian street running along the south slope of the Acropolis, pedestrianised in 2003 and shaped by architect Dimitris Pikionis in the 1950s. It passes the Acropolis Museum, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the Theatre of Dionysus, and continues west as Apostolou Pavlou around Thiseio for a combined stretch of roughly 1.5 km. Free and open at all hours; the Onassis Foundation funded a lighting upgrade announced in late 2024.
Essen & Trinken · Psyri / Central Market
Windowless cellar taverna under the corner of Sokratous and Theatrou, a couple of minutes from the central market. There is no sign, no printed menu and no reservations: you sit at communal tables and eat the two or three things being cooked that day, with wine drawn from barrels along the wall. Daytime into early evening, cash.

Tagesausflüge · West Attica
The sanctuary of Demeter west of Athens, whose Telesterion was the largest hall of its kind in Greece and the setting for the Eleusinian Mysteries, initiation rites built on the promise of a better fate after death. The site also holds temples of Triptolemos, Artemis and Poseidon and a Roman bridge over the Kephissos. Modern Elefsina is an industrial town with Greece's largest oil refinery; it held the European Capital of Culture title in 2023, deferred from 2021 because of the pandemic.

Parks & Grün · Athens Riviera
The first completed piece — about 7 hectares — of the metropolitan park being built on the former Ellinikon airport site, open to the public free of charge with an interactive fountain, a forest playground, exercise and yoga areas and a planted garden. The full coastal park of roughly 2 million square metres, billed as Europe's largest of its kind, is not yet open; reporting in 2026 points to a phased public opening from 2027 onward.

Museen · Koukaki
The state contemporary art museum, founded in 2000 and housed in the converted Fix brewery on Kallirrois Avenue at Amvrosiou Frantzi, a short walk from Syngrou-Fix metro. It shows Greek and international work across several floors, opens late on Thursdays and closes on Mondays.

Tagesausflüge · Argolis
The theatre of the Sanctuary of Asklepios seats 13,000–14,000 across 34 original rows extended by 21 Roman rows. Its limestone seating filters out low-frequency crowd noise while carrying higher frequencies from the orchestra, which explains much of its acoustic reputation, though claims of perfect intelligibility are overstated. It is still in use: the Athens Epidaurus Festival programmed the ancient theatre from 20 June to 29 August 2026, and admission to the site rose from €12 to €20 in April 2025.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Acropolis
Ionic temple on the north side of the Acropolis, built c. 421–406 BC on ground associated with several older cults. Its Porch of the Caryatids carries replica figures; five originals are in the Acropolis Museum and one is in the British Museum.

Stadtteile · Exarcheia
Historically the centre of Athens' left, anarchist and student scene, with bookshops, rebetiko and rock bars, and a long tradition of political graffiti. Since 2022 a Line 4 metro construction site has occupied much of Exarcheia Square, police presence is permanent, and short-term rentals and tourist-facing cafés have multiplied — all of which is actively contested locally, with demonstrations continuing into 2026. In practice it is a normal, busy inner-city neighbourhood by day; the friction is political rather than a matter of visitor safety.

Parks & Grün · Palaio Faliro
A seafront park in Palaio Faliro between Poseidonos Avenue and Flisvos Marina, with a very large municipal playground opened in 2008, sports courts, outdoor gym equipment, a small amphitheatre and a wide promenade used for walking, running and cycling. The Park of Maritime Tradition next door holds the 1910 armoured cruiser Georgios Averof, now a museum ship.

State-owned archaeological sites, monuments and museums admit everyone free on 6 March (in memory of Melina Mercouri), 18 April (International Monuments Day), 18 May (International Museums Day), the last weekend of September (European Heritage Days) and 28 October, plus the first and third Sunday of each month from 1 November to 31 March. These apply to state sites only — the Acropolis Museum, which is a separate legal entity, and privately run venues set their own policy. Free days at the Acropolis are busy, and the daily visitor cap still applies.

Museen · Plaka
A private museum of contemporary European figurative painting founded by Vlassis Frissiras in 2000, in two restored neoclassical houses at Monis Asteriou 3 and 7 in Plaka, one of them by Ernst Ziller. Around 4,000 works on the human form are shown in rotation. The museum is currently closed to the public and no reopening date has been published.
Nachtleben · Pireos / Rouf
Large live venue at Pireos 209, on the industrial stretch towards Tavros, hosting the bigger international rock and metal shows that do not fill an arena. Programme confirmed through late 2026.

Nachtleben · Kato Patisia / Liosion
Mid-size standing live venue at Liosion 205, north of the centre, running rock, metal, punk and international touring bills. A full programme was scheduled through autumn 2026. Roughly ten minutes by taxi from Omonia; the walk is not a pleasant one at night.

Stadtteile · Gazi / Kerameikos
Built around the converted Technopolis gasworks complex, Gazi has been Athens' main late-night club district for two decades and remains the centre of the city's LGBTQ+ nightlife. It is largely dead by day, and the surrounding blocks are ordinary residential Athens rather than an extension of the bar strip.

Stadtteile · Glyfada
The main town of the Athens Riviera, about 30-40 minutes from the centre by tram (change at Pikrodafni between lines T6 and T7). A grid of shopping streets around Grigoriou Lambraki, a string of organised and free public beaches, and Greece's first 18-hole golf course. Busy year-round, not just in summer, and expensive by Athenian standards.

Museen · Pangrati
Opened in October 2019 at Eratosthenous 13 in Pangrati, in a 1920s mansion extended by a ten-storey structure with five levels below ground. The collection pairs 19th and 20th century Western work — Cézanne, Picasso, Van Gogh, Giacometti, Miró — with a floor-by-floor survey of modern Greek painting.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Monastiraki
A large walled complex built by the emperor Hadrian in AD 132 north of the Acropolis, with reading rooms, lecture halls and a courtyard around a pool. Remains of later churches built inside the courtyard are also visible.

Nachtleben · Mets
Athens' main jazz room, at Trivonianou 17 in Mets opposite the First Cemetery, programming international and Greek acts across jazz, blues and adjacent genres, often for multi-night residencies. Closed through the summer and over Easter week.

Museen · Thiseio
A privately funded museum founded in 2004 at Herakleidon 16 in Thiseio, now working as an interactive centre around the science, art and technology of the ancient Greeks. It runs daily from April to October and Wednesday to Sunday in winter; the building is not suitable for visitors with mobility restrictions.

Parks & Grün · Thiseio
A small pine-covered hill above Thiseio, between the Pnyx and Philopappos, occupied by the National Observatory of Athens founded in 1842 — the oldest research institution in modern Greece. The grounds are open on foot; the Thiseio Visitor Centre runs evening guided tours of the Geoastrophysics Museum and the historic telescopes, with English-language slots and a small charge. The 1902 Doridis dome has been closed for maintenance, with portable telescopes used instead.
Essen & Trinken · Monastiraki / Agia Irini
Souvlaki shop on Agia Irini square opened in 2018 by a group of chefs, including the Liakos brothers. Sourced meat, house-made pita and regional Greek ingredients, in a sit-down room rather than a takeaway window. Open daily from midday to late evening.

Tagesausflüge · Saronic Gulf
A Saronic island 37 nautical miles (69 km) from Piraeus, population 2,070 at the 2021 census. Wheeled transport is banned by law, including bicycles and e-bikes, with rubbish trucks the only motor vehicles; horses, mules, donkeys and water taxis do the work instead. High-speed catamarans and hydrofoils from Piraeus take roughly 1 hour 10 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes depending on service.
Aktivitäten · Kaisariani / Hymettus
The Kaisariani aesthetic forest on the western flank of Hymettus is the easiest hill walk reachable from the city centre: bus 224 from Syntagma or Evangelismos runs to the end of the line at Kaisariani, and trails climb from there through pine and cypress. The 11th-century Kaisariani Monastery is a ticketed Byzantine site at the trailhead, with the 5th-century basilica of Agios Markos and the Taxiarches chapel further up. Routes range from a 20-minute botanical loop to walks of two hours or more.
Essen & Trinken · Neos Kosmos / Syngrou
One-star restaurant on the sixth floor of the Onassis Stegi on Syngrou Avenue; in warm months service moves to the seventh-floor roof terrace with a view over the city to the Acropolis. Note that former head chef Tasos Mantis has since opened a separate restaurant, Amphibian, in the same building.

Stadtteile · Ilisia
An eastern district split into Kato Ilisia, around the Hilton building (reopened as Conrad Athens The Ilisian) and the Athens Concert Hall, and Ano Ilisia, which runs up to the university campus at Zografou. Well served by Metro Line 3, mostly middle-class residential, with the Syngrou pine grove and the Byzantine and War museums nearby.

Museen · Gazi / Kerameikos
The preserved Athens gasworks at Pireos 100 in Gazi, which produced town gas from 1862 until 1984 and now forms the Technopolis cultural complex. Retorts, purifiers, gasholders and the workers' buildings are open as a museum, closed Mondays, with a low entrance fee.
Essen & Trinken · Vouliagmeni / Kavouri
Long-established seaside restaurant at Apollonos 28 on the Kavouri side of Vouliagmeni, roughly 40 minutes south of the centre. Seafood and Mediterranean cooking with some Asian influence, in a formal setting above the water; open midday to late.

Museen · Plaka
Founded in 1977, the museum documents 2,300 years of Jewish life in Greece through more than 10,000 objects, including Holocaust material and a reconstructed synagogue interior. Its building at Nikis 39 is not currently receiving visitors: the collection is presented at the Benaki Museum from 20 June 2026 to 1 February 2027, with a separate exhibition at Kyristou 8 in Plaka until 30 November 2026.

Parks & Grün · Kaisariani
A protected reforested area on the western slope of Mount Hymettus above Kaisariani, planted from the 1950s by the Philodassiki Enosi Athinon with pine, cypress, oak, carob and olive. It contains the 11th-century Kaisariani Monastery, a spring, picnic areas and a network of marked trails linking to Kalopoula and the Hymettus ridge. About 20-25 minutes by car from the centre; bus access is limited.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Kaisariani
A walled Byzantine monastery on the wooded north slope of Mount Hymettus, its katholikon dating to around 1100 and its frescoes mostly to the 17th and 18th centuries. It is no longer an active monastery but an archaeological site run by the Ministry of Culture, closed on Tuesdays.

Olympiacos' 33,334-seat ground in Piraeus, the easiest big-club fixture to reach from central Athens: Metro Line 1 to Faliro station, about 15 minutes from the centre, or tram line T7 to the SEF stop. Greek Super League matches run from late August to May. Tickets for the biggest derbies sell out and away allocations are frequently restricted.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Gazi / Kerameikos
The potters' quarter and principal cemetery of ancient Athens, with the Dipylon and Sacred Gate, stretches of the city wall and grave monuments along the Street of Tombs, plus an on-site museum. The site and museum have been closed to the public since 5 May 2025 for an infrastructure and accessibility upgrade, and as of the Ephorate's January 2026 notice no reopening date had been given.

Stadtteile · Gazi / Kerameikos
The area around the ancient cemetery and city gates of the same name, between Psyri, Gazi and Metaxourgeio, with its own metro station on Line 3. Leonidou Street and the blocks toward Gazi have filled with small bars and cafés; the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art overlooks the archaeological site.

Stadtteile · Kifisia
The historic wealthy northern suburb at the foot of Mount Penteli, terminus of Metro Line 1 and about 25-30 minutes from the centre. Villas, mature gardens, a concentration of luxury retail around Kolokotroni and Kefalari, old patisseries, and the Goulandris Natural History Museum; Alonia is the older, plainer quarter. Noticeably cooler than the centre in summer.
Essen & Trinken · Plateia Theatrou / Psyri
Taverna on Plateia Theatrou trading since 1927, on the edge of the market district. Traditional cooked dishes and mezedes, with live Greek music most evenings from around 20:30 (schedules shift by season, and there can be a music charge). Book at weekends.

Stadtteile · Kolonaki
The wealthy district on the south-west slope of Lycabettus: embassies, private galleries, the Benaki and Goulandris museums, and designer retail on Skoufa and Patriarchou Ioakeim. The crisis years thinned out the fashion retail and replaced some of it with food shops and cafés; Kolonaki Square and Dexameni remain the neighbourhood's social centres.

Stadtteile · Kolonos
A working-class district north-west of the centre, next to Sepolia and Akadimia Platonos, with a large migrant population and some of the cheaper rents in the municipality of Athens. Its main draw is the adjoining archaeological park of Plato's Academy, an open green site slated for remodelling and a planned museum. Few visitor facilities; almost no tourism.

Museen · Kolonaki
Working reconstructions of ancient Greek machines — water clocks, automata, surveying and medical instruments, catapults and a model of the Antikythera Mechanism — in an Art Nouveau building at Pindarou 6 and Akademias in Kolonaki. It has run since 2018 with two permanent exhibitions, one on technology and one on musical instruments and toys.

Stadtteile · Koukaki
A residential neighbourhood immediately south of the Acropolis, bounded by Dionysiou Areopagitou, Philopappos Hill and Syngrou Avenue, with two metro stations (Akropoli and Syngrou-Fix). Drakou and Georgaki Olympiou are its café and taverna streets; it has been heavily affected by short-term rentals since around 2017 and is inside the central districts where new registrations are frozen.
Essen & Trinken · Aiolou / Omonia
Loukoumades shop at Aiolou 87, open since 1923 and largely unchanged inside. Fried dough balls in honey syrup with cinnamon and walnuts, plus bougatsa and coffee. Daytime hours Monday to Saturday, closed Sundays.
Praktisches · Peristeri / Kato Patisia
Long-distance buses leave from two separate terminals and the destination decides which. Kifissos (Leoforos Kifisou 100, Peristeri) is the busier of the two, handling around 12 million passengers a year for the Peloponnese, Epirus, Macedonia and the Ionian islands; Liosion (Terminal B) covers central Greece including Delphi, roughly three hours and about €15 one way on KTEL Fokidas. Both are due to be replaced by a single terminal at Eleonas next to the metro station, a project repeatedly delayed — treat any claim that it has opened as unverified until you see it.

Stadtteile · Kypseli
A dense, very mixed neighbourhood north of the centre — once bourgeois, then long neglected, now among the fastest-changing areas in Athens. Fokionos Negri, a pedestrianised boulevard built over a stream, is the spine; the restored 1935 Municipal Market at No. 42 runs as a social-enterprise and events space and is the clearest marker of the area's shift.
Aktivitäten · Vouliagmeni
A brackish thermal lake in an elliptical basin about 260 m by 145 m, fed by underground currents through Mount Hymettus and kept between roughly 22°C and 29°C year-round. It formed when a cave roof collapsed around 2,000 years ago and reaches 17 m deep at its centre. 2026 admission is €16 on weekdays and €19 at weekends and holidays; high-season hours are 08:00–19:00, shortening to 08:30–16:30 from 10 November to 1 March.

Tagesausflüge · South-east Attica
A mining town on the south-east Attic coast, 8 km north of Sounion, whose silver mines funded the classical Athenian state; extraction evidence goes back to around 3200 BC with systematic working from the 6th century BC. Nineteenth-century industrial buildings survive alongside the Mineralogical Museum. The port is the third Athens ferry gateway after Piraeus and Rafina, serving Kea and Kythnos and onward Cycladic routes, with sailings dropping sharply outside June to September.
Essen & Trinken · Omonia
Souvlaki counter on Satovriandou 20 near Omonia, trading since 1951 and known for a spiced, Constantinopolitan style: pita, meat, tomato, onion and nothing else. A second shop operates at Romvis 18, closer to Syntagma.

Nachtleben · Kato Petralona
Bar in a former art warehouse at Agathodemonos 37 in Kato Petralona, opened in 2022 and named the best bar in Europe in the first Europe's 50 Best Bars ranking, published July 2026. Zero-waste approach built on house ferments — beer, fruit wines, bread — alongside classics.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Plaka
A very small stone church beside the Metropolitan Cathedral, built almost entirely from reused ancient and early Christian carved blocks, including a marble calendar frieze over the door. Its date is disputed: long attributed to the 12th or 13th century, it has also been argued to be a post-1436 assembly of older spolia.

Parks & Grün · Kolonaki
A 277-metre limestone hill above Kolonaki, the highest point in central Athens, pine-planted on its lower slopes and topped by the 19th-century chapel of St George, a restaurant and a bar. A funicular runs up from Aristippou Street in a tunnel, so there is no view on the ride; the walking paths from Kolonaki take roughly 30-40 minutes. The open-air Lycabettus Theatre, closed since 2008, reopened in 2023 and hosts concerts from about May to October.
Aktivitäten · Kolonaki
At 277 m this is the highest point in central Athens, topped by the 19th-century chapel of St George, an open-air theatre and a restaurant. The funicular's lower terminus is at the top of Aristippou Street in Kolonaki (not on the hill itself); 2026 sources give €10 one way and €13 return, though older listings say €7/€10, so check at the kiosk. In August 2026 the hill was closed outright to visitors and vehicles on days when Attica hit the highest civil-protection fire-risk category.

Tagesausflüge · North-east Attica
The Soros, a mound 9 m high and 50 m across excavated by Valerios Stais in 1890, holds the ashes of the 192 Athenians killed at the battle of 490 BC. The Archaeological Museum of Marathon, opened in 1975, displays finds from the battlefield and from the nearby Egyptian sanctuary. The site is quiet and takes little time; it pairs naturally with Ramnous further north.

Stadtteile · Marousi
A northern suburb that doubles as one of Attica's main business districts, strung along Kifissias Avenue and served by Metro Line 3 and the suburban railway. It holds the OAKA Olympic Sports Complex — the 2004 main stadium, now Panathinaikos' home ground and a large concert venue — and The Mall Athens shopping centre. Corporate and residential rather than scenic.
Praktisches · Aegean
The meltemi is a dry northerly that blows across the Aegean mainly from mid-July through August, commonly at Beaufort 5–7 and sometimes 8. Small high-speed catamarans stop first, often around Beaufort 7, while large conventional ferries usually keep running to 7 and are cancelled from 8 upwards; the port authority and the operator decide route by route. In August 2026 gusts above 100 km/h produced a general sailing ban from Rafina and Lavrio with cancellations out of Piraeus, so never book an island hop for the same day as an outbound flight.

Stadtteile · Metaxourgeio
A genuinely mixed district north of Kerameikos, named after a 19th-century silk mill: galleries, small theatres and restaurants around Avdi Square sit alongside migrant-run shops, a South and East Asian commercial strip near Kolonou Street, and blocks that remain run-down. Change here has been slower and patchier than in Koukaki or Pangrati.

Tagesausflüge · Thessaly (overnight recommended)
Sandstone pillars in Thessaly between Kalambaka and Kastraki carrying six monasteries still open to visitors, each closed on a different weekday and each charging €5 in cash at the door. Dress code is enforced: skirts below the knee and covered shoulders for women, long trousers for men, no sleeveless tops. This is a long trip and rail access is broken — the Palaiofarsalos–Kalambaka line has been suspended since the 2023 Storm Daniel floods with reopening scheduled for 2028, so trains from Athens terminate at Palaiofarsalos and a bus covers the last 90 km.

Stadtteile · Mets
A small, steep neighbourhood between the Panathenaic Stadium and the First Cemetery, on the slopes of Ardittos Hill. Century-old cottages, neoclassical houses and interwar apartment blocks, very few shops, and almost no tour groups despite being ten minutes from the Acropolis.

Stadtteile · Monastiraki
The square and flea-market grid between Plaka, Psyri and the Ancient Agora, with a metro interchange (Lines 1 and 3) underneath it. Avissynias Square and the surrounding lanes still hold genuine antique and junk dealers; Ifestou and Pandrossou streets are mostly mass-market souvenirs, and the area's rooftop bars are busy year-round.
Aktivitäten · Monastiraki
The market spreads from Monastiraki square down Ifaistou and Pandrossou into Avissynias, with permanent shops open all week and a much larger street market on Sundays, roughly 07:00 to 16:00. Weekday trade is dominated by souvenirs, leather and second-hand clothing; the genuinely old stock appears on Sunday morning. Monastiraki metro station on the square serves Lines 1 and 3.

Parks & Grün · East Attica
The long ridge closing Athens to the east, 1,026 metres at its summit, a Natura 2000 protected area and the closest real mountain walking to the city. Its western flank carries the Kaisariani and other reforested tracts; higher up it is largely bare, aromatic scrub, and the summit area holds military and telecoms installations reached by an asphalt road. Repeated fires have shaped the vegetation, and marked loop trails start from the Kaisariani side.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Kolonaki
A limestone hill of 277 m, the highest point in central Athens, topped by the 19th-century chapel of St George, an open-air theatre and a restaurant. A funicular in tunnel runs from Aristippou Street in Kolonaki, or you can walk up on foot paths.

Parks & Grün · North Attica
Attica's highest mountain (1,413 m at Karavola) and a national park since 1961, about an hour north of the centre, with Greek fir forest, red deer, the Bafi and Flabouri refuges and a cable car up to the Mont Parnes casino. The 2007 wildfire destroyed a large part of the fir forest and recovery is still visible as a patchwork of regrowth and reforestation; further fires have broken out in the area, including several during 2026, so check access before setting out.

Museen · Plaka
A museum and ethnomusicology centre in the Lassanis mansion at Diogenous 1-3 in Plaka, built on Fivos Anoyanakis's collection of roughly 1,200 Greek folk instruments from the 18th century onward, with listening posts for each family of instrument. It has been reported temporarily closed to the public, so confirm before going.

Museen · Kolonaki
Founded on the Nikolaos and Dolly Goulandris collection, showing over 3,000 objects of Cycladic, ancient Greek and Cypriot art at Neofytou Douka 4. The main 1985 building by Ioannis Vikelas is joined by the neoclassical Stathatos Mansion, added in 1991 and used for temporary exhibitions; closed Tuesdays.

Museen · Monastiraki
A commercial interactive attraction at Ermou 119 in Monastiraki, entered from Astiggos 12, with optical illusion rooms, holograms and puzzle exhibits. It keeps long daily hours, later at weekends, and is aimed at families rather than specialists.

Tagesausflüge · Argolis
The Bronze Age citadel 120 km south-west of Athens and 11 km north of Argos, built on a hill 274 m above sea level behind Cyclopean walls whose largest blocks weigh over 20 tonnes. The Lion Gate, Grave Circles A and B, the palace megaron and the Treasury of Atreus tholos tomb are the main features, with a site museum. Admission rose from €12 to €20 on 1 April 2025.

Tagesausflüge · Argolis
The first capital of Greece, from 1829 until Otto moved the seat to Athens in 1834, with an old town below three fortifications: Palamidi, the last major Venetian overseas construction, taken by Greek forces in November 1822; Acronauplia, whose walls run back to pre-classical times; and the Bourtzi islet in the harbour. Buses from Athens take about two to two hours twenty, via Corinth and Argos. It works better as an overnight base for the Argolid than as a same-day return.

Museen · Exarcheia
The largest archaeological collection in Greece, on Patission Street, covering prehistory to late antiquity. Holdings include the Mycenaean gold from Grave Circle A with the so-called Mask of Agamemnon, the Antikythera Mechanism and the bronze Artemision Zeus or Poseidon. A large Chipperfield–Tombazis expansion has been approved but the museum remains open.

Museen · Pangrati
The state collection of Greek art from the post-Byzantine period to the 20th century, with a smaller European holding, at Vasileos Konstantinou 50. The building reopened on 24 March 2021 after an eight-year rebuild that roughly tripled its exhibition space; closed Tuesdays, late opening on Wednesdays.

Parks & Grün · Syntagma
The 15.5-hectare royal garden laid out from the 1830s behind the Parliament, running down to the Zappeion. Shaded gravel paths, ancient column fragments, a duck pond, a small botanical museum and a modest children's zoo. Free, open from sunrise to sunset, and the most reliable shade in central Athens in summer.

Stadtteile · Nea Smyrni
A large, leafy municipality south of the centre founded by Asia Minor refugees, built around a pedestrianised central square that is one of the busiest evening meeting points in southern Athens. Next to the square is Alsos Neas Smyrnis, a pine grove with a running track, outdoor gym and summer cinema. Almost entirely a residential and local-nightlife area, with no monuments.

Stadtteile · Neos Kosmos
A working residential district along Syngrou Avenue south of the centre, anchored culturally by the Onassis Stegi at 107-109 Syngrou and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in the former Fix brewery on Kallirrois. Around those institutions are record shops, small theatres and bars; away from them it stays plainly residential.
Essen & Trinken · Syntagma
Small white-walled bistro at Voulis 31-33 where Sotiris Kontizas cooks a Greek-Japanese crossover — his own background — alongside broader East and Southeast Asian influences. Lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday. The team closes Athens over high summer and runs a Mykonos site instead, so check before travelling in July and August.

Museen · Syntagma
Over half a million coins, medals, gems, weights and seals from about 1400 BC to modern times, displayed in Iliou Melathron, the 1878–1880 mansion Ernst Ziller built for Heinrich Schliemann. The painted interiors and mosaic floors are as much the point as the coins; closed Tuesdays.
Essen & Trinken · Syntagma
Tiny family souvlaki counter at Pentelis 5, a short walk from Syntagma. Weekday hours only, and it shuts once the day's meat runs out. Frequently confused with the separate, older Kosta's Souvlaki on Agia Irini square, which has its own long queue.
Aktivitäten · Marousi
The 2004 Olympic main stadium, capacity around 69,600, with Santiago Calatrava's 304-metre twin-arch roof. It was shut in October 2023 after a roof safety inspection and reopened in May 2024, with further works continuing. Panathinaikos use it for European fixtures while playing league matches at Leoforos Alexandras pending their new Votanikos ground, and it hosts stadium concerts; Irini station on Metro Line 1 is at the gate.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Makrygianni
Roman theatre of about 5,000 seats on the south slope of the Acropolis, completed in AD 161 as a gift from Herodes Atticus. It has been the main summer stage of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, but after a final programme in June 2026 it closed to the public for restoration works expected to last around three years.
Nachtleben · Syntagma
Vermouth bar at Skouleniou 2, off Klafthmonos square, billed as the first vermuteria in Greece. Vermouth-led drinks and Italian food including pizza; open from morning until 02:00, to 04:00 Friday and Saturday.
Essen & Trinken · Varvakios Agora
Cook-house inside the Varvakios market hall, in business since 1898 and now the last tripe-soup kitchen left in the market. Opens around 06:30 with patsas and mageiritsa on the boil and runs through to early evening, Monday to Saturday. Filopoimenos 4.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Syntagma
The neoclassical building on Stadiou Street that housed the Greek Parliament from 1875 to 1935. It has held the National Historical Museum since 1960, covering Greek history from the fall of Constantinople in 1453 to the Second World War; the statue of Kolokotronis stands in front.

Stadtteile · Omonia
The other central square, a metro interchange (Lines 1 and 2) redesigned in 2020 with a restored fountain, ringed by new and renovated hotels and by the wholesale and cheap-retail streets running toward the Central Market. The square itself and the main avenues are busy and policed; some narrow side streets to the north-west have visible drug use, rough sleeping and street prostitution, particularly at night. It is not dangerous to walk through, but it is the most visibly hard-edged part of central Athens.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Pangrati
A horseshoe stadium rebuilt entirely in Pentelic marble in the 1890s on the site of the 4th-century BC Panathenaic stadium, which is why it is nicknamed Kallimarmaro. It hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and is now the finish of the Athens Marathon and the handover point for the Olympic flame.
Aktivitäten · Pangrati / Mets
The all-marble stadium rebuilt for the 1896 Olympics, open 08:00–19:00 March to October and 08:00–17:00 November to February. Admission has been €12, reduced €6, since 1 October 2025. Important for 2026: the track itself was closed to visitors while the surface was replaced and the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic flame ceremony was prepared, with access resuming on 17 September 2026, so runners arriving before that date can enter the stadium but not use the track.

Stadtteile · Pangrati
A dense residential neighbourhood east of the Panathenaic Stadium that became one of the city's main eating-out districts during and after the crisis, when chefs and bars followed cheap rents. Varnava and Plastira squares are the focal points; prices and rents have risen sharply since 2020 and it is now firmly on the visitor map rather than a local secret.
Aktivitäten · Parnitha / Thrakomakedones
The highest mountain in Attica and a national park, with the best-known route running up the Chouni ravine from Thrakomakedones to the Bafi refuge, which is open year-round and serves food. A free cable car operated by the Mont Parnes casino also reaches the plateau. In July and August parts of the park are regularly closed: at civil-protection fire-risk category 4 national parks and trails shut and forest access is banned, and category 5 seals the forest entirely.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Acropolis
The Doric temple of Athena Parthenos on the summit of the Acropolis, begun in 447 BC and largely finished by 432 BC. Restoration and anastylosis work has been running continuously since 1975, so scaffolding and cranes are usually present.

Parks & Grün · Pedion Areos / Exarcheia
The largest public park in central Athens, laid out in 1934 as a memorial to the fighters of 1821, with a long central avenue lined by busts of revolutionary leaders. It went through years of neglect and had a reputation for drug dealing and rough sleeping; a series of restorations, including Onassis Foundation-funded replanting and repaving, has improved lighting, paths and planting. Fine by day and in the early evening; quieter corners are still best avoided late at night.

Stadtteile · Petralona
Two linked neighbourhoods west of Philopappos Hill, settled in part by Asia Minor refugees after 1922. Ano Petralona, on the hill slope, has the small squares, old tavernas and bars and is the one usually cited as a gentrification case; Kato Petralona, around the Line 1 station, is flatter, plainer and more everyday.
Praktisches · citywide
Ordinary Athens pharmacies keep split hours — commonly around 08:00–14:00 and 17:00–20:00 — and close on Sundays, so outside those windows you need an εφημερεύον, a duty pharmacy. Duty rotates daily by district and covers evenings, nights and holidays; lists are posted on every pharmacy door and published on vrisko.gr and xo.gr. Pharmacists in Greece can dispense a wide range of medicines and give basic advice without a doctor's appointment.

Parks & Grün · Koukaki / Thiseio
A pine-covered hill south-west of the Acropolis, open and unfenced, crowned by the 2nd-century AD Philopappos funerary monument. Its paths, terraces and the church of Agios Dimitrios Loumbardiaris were laid out by architect Dimitris Pikionis between 1954 and 1957 using salvaged marble and stone — a listed work of landscape architecture in its own right. The standard viewpoint for photographing the Acropolis at sunset.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Koukaki
A two-storey marble tomb of AD 114–116 for Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos, a prince of Commagene and Athenian benefactor, on the summit of the Hill of the Muses. The hill is a free public park with one of the standard head-on views of the Acropolis.

Stadtteile · Piraeus
Greece's main port and a city in its own right, about 20 minutes from Syntagma on Metro Line 3. Beyond the ferry terminals are Zea/Pasalimani marina, the hillside neighbourhood of Kastella with the Veakeio open-air theatre, and Mikrolimano, a small fishing harbour ringed by fish restaurants and sailing clubs. The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus and the Municipal Theatre are the other reasons to come.
Praktisches · Piraeus
Piraeus has twelve numbered gates (E1–E12) spread over a perimeter that takes about an hour to walk end to end, so the gate matters more than the port. Broadly: E8 for conventional Saronic boats (Aegina, Poros, Hydra, Spetses), E9 for the Aero Highspeed Saronic services, E1 for the Dodecanese, E2 and E3 for Crete and the north Aegean, E6/E7 and E9/E10 for the Cyclades — but gates change with traffic, so confirm on the day. A free shuttle bus circles the port from near gate E5, and Piraeus metro station (Lines 1 and 3) is at the main entrance.

Stadtteile · Plaka
The old quarter on the north-east slope of the Acropolis: neoclassical houses, stepped lanes and the densest concentration of souvenir shops and tourist tavernas in Greece. It is now the sharp end of Athens' overtourism debate — roughly 2,000 residents against a summer daily flow many times that, and no new short-term rental registrations allowed in the district since January 2025.
Aktivitäten · Monastiraki / Psyri
A small square behind Monastiraki lined with antique and bric-a-brac dealers, where the Sunday morning trade in furniture, glassware, old prints, records and instruments concentrates. Dealers set up early and the better stock moves before mid-morning. Several of the surrounding shops keep normal weekday hours, but Sunday is when the square itself fills.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Thiseio
The hill west of the Acropolis where the Athenian assembly met from about 507 BC, with the rock-cut speakers' platform still visible. It is an unfenced part of the Philopappos parkland, free to enter and open at all hours.

Tagesausflüge · Saronic Gulf
A small Saronic island separated from the Peloponnese by a channel only 200 m wide, with a car ferry shuttling across to Galatas. The town's landmark is the 1927 clock tower, and lemon groves cover the mainland slope opposite. Blue Star services from Piraeus take around 55 minutes to an hour, conventional boats roughly two and a half hours.
Praktisches · Attica and Corinthia
Operated by Hellenic Train and sharing the airport branch with Metro Line 3, the Proastiakos also runs west and south to Corinth and Kiato, making it the practical way to reach Ancient Corinth by public transport. Within the Athens city zone the standard €1.20 ninety-minute ticket is valid with transfers to metro, bus and tram; the airport segment costs the same €9 as the metro, and stations beyond the city zone are charged separately. Services run roughly 04:30 to 23:00.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Acropolis
The monumental entrance to the Acropolis, built 437–432 BC to designs by the architect Mnesicles and left unfinished. Every visitor passes through it, so it is busiest in the two hours after opening.

Stadtteile · Psyri
A former workshop and warehouse quarter north of Monastiraki, now one of the busiest eating and drinking districts in the centre — mezedopoleia, cocktail bars, rooftops and a lot of street art, with leather and hardware workshops still trading on some blocks. Peak street activity runs from about midnight, and the mix of genuine tavernas and tourist-facing ones is uneven.
Praktisches · Rafina, East Attica
Athens' second ferry port, on the east coast and much closer to the airport than Piraeus. It is the better departure point for Andros, Tinos and Mykonos, with SeaJets, Golden Star and Fast Ferries running eleven or more sailings a day at peak summer. A KTEL Attikis bus links the airport to Rafina in about 30 minutes for around €4, leaving from outside Exit 5 at Arrivals; a taxi is roughly 20 minutes.

Tagesausflüge · North-east Attica
A fortified Attic deme on a rocky peninsula surrounded by sea on two-thirds of its circumference, north-east of Marathon. About 600 m south of the town stands the sanctuary of Nemesis on a white marble platform, with a small poros temple of the late 6th century BC beside a large hexastyle temple of 460–420 BC that once held a colossal marble Nemesis by Agorakritos. The acropolis occupies a 28 m hill roughly 230 by 270 m, with a well-preserved main gate; it gets very few visitors and there is no public transport to the gate.

Nachtleben · Exarcheia
Open-air cinema in a walled courtyard at Valtetsiou 46 in Exarcheia, programming repertory and arthouse alongside new releases. Tickets around €8, reduced €6, with a €5 Wednesday. Confirmed screening in early September 2026.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Plaka
The market square built between about 27 and 10 BC with funds from Augustus, east of the older Greek Agora. Its west entrance is the Doric Gate of Athena Archegetis, and the Tower of the Winds stands inside the enclosure.

Nachtleben · Monastiraki
All-day gay café-bar on Agia Irini square, open from around 09:00 to 01:00 and effectively the anchor of the square's outdoor drinking. Coffee and food by day, cocktails and wine at night; mixed crowd.
Essen & Trinken · Metaxourgeio / Kerameikos
Gastro-taverna at Kerameikou 49 in Metaxourgeio, opened in 2014 in the premises of the former Bahamas. A short blackboard menu of Greek produce cooked in a contemporary register, open from morning until roughly 03:00. Listings were last refreshed in July 2026.
Nachtleben · Gazi / Kerameikos
Long-running gay club at Triptolemou 10 in Gazi, with two dance floors — pop on one, house on the other. Among the first of the Gazi gay venues and still one of the busiest; reviews continued through 2026.
Essen & Trinken · Pagrati
French-leaning tasting-menu restaurant at Pyrronos 5 in Pagrati, first starred in 2002 and listed with one Michelin star in the current Greek selection, down from two. Dinner only, reservations essential; its own booking system was live in 2026.
Aktivitäten · Kallithea
Renzo Piano's complex in Kallithea houses the National Library of Greece and the Greek National Opera inside a 210,000 m² public park, donated to the Greek state in 2017. The park is free and open daily from 06:00 to midnight, with a year-round programme of free concerts, screenings, yoga and sport. Free kayaking on the Canal ran Saturdays and Sundays 18:00–20:00 from 18 April to 27 September 2026.

Parks & Grün · Kallithea / Faliro
A 21-hectare park on former racecourse land at Kallithea/Faliro, designed by Renzo Piano as part of the cultural centre that houses the National Library and the Greek National Opera. Mediterranean planting, a Great Lawn used for outdoor concerts and film screenings, a 400-metre seawater canal, running paths, playgrounds and a roof terrace with sea and Acropolis views. Entry to the park is free and the centre runs a large year-round programme of free events.
Nachtleben · Sofokleous / Central Market
Rembetiko venue in the arcade at Sofokleous 19, beside the central market, long regarded as the most serious of its kind in the city. Afternoon sessions Friday to Sunday and late-night sessions Friday and Saturday, with food alongside the music. It has closed and reopened over the years, so telephone before going.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Monastiraki
A two-storey colonnaded hall given by Attalos II of Pergamon around 150 BC and rebuilt from 1952 to 1956 by the American School of Classical Studies. It houses the Museum of the Ancient Agora, with finds from the 7th century BC to the Byzantine period including voting and jury equipment from the Athenian courts.
Aktivitäten · Psyri / Metaxourgeio
The two adjoining neighbourhoods west of Monastiraki hold most of the city's large-format murals. Landmarks include WD (Wild Drawing)'s anamorphic owl 'Knowledge Speaks, Wisdom Listens' at Palaiologou and Samou in Metaxourgeio, INO's 'Freedom for Sale' at Leonidou and Evrymedontos, and a Same84 mural at Kerameikou and Myllerou. Walking between them takes an hour or two and costs nothing; work is repainted over time, so specific pieces come and go.

Parks & Grün · Exarcheia
A small rocky hill above Exarcheia, one of the few green spaces in that part of the city, with paths up to a viewpoint over the centre. A redevelopment by the property company Prodea, announced in 2021, became a long-running conflict with local assemblies; the company withdrew from the site in February 2024, leaving parts of the hill in a half-finished state. Facilities are basic and the hill is quiet by day.

Almost all shops close on Sundays; Greek law permits Sunday trading only in designated tourist zones and on a handful of specified Sundays during the January and summer sales and before Christmas. Weekday retail follows split hours, typically 09:00–15:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and 09:00–14:00 plus 17:30–21:00 on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. 15 August, the Assumption, is a full public holiday when supermarkets and large stores close, and many small independent businesses shut for a fortnight around it.

Stadtteile · Syntagma
The civic and transport centre of Athens: the Parliament building and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with the Evzone guard change on the hour, the main metro interchange (Lines 2 and 3, direct to the airport), and the head of Ermou shopping street. It is a place people pass through and demonstrate in rather than a residential neighbourhood.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Syntagma
The central square of Athens, named after the constitution granted in September 1843, facing the Old Royal Palace which has housed Parliament since 1934. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier below the Parliament, a relief of a fallen warrior, is guarded by Evzones of the Presidential Guard who change on the hour; the larger ceremony with a band takes place on Sunday mornings at about 11:00.
Essen & Trinken · Psyri / Evripidou

Aktivitäten · Gazi / Kerameikos
The city's former gasworks, founded in 1857 and running as a municipal cultural venue since 1999 across roughly 30,000 m². The Industrial Gas Museum, opened in 2013 within the complex, documents the plant's machinery and the workers who ran it. The grounds host concerts, exhibitions and festivals including the Athens Digital Arts Festival; the site sits beside Kerameikos metro station.

Nachtleben · Gazi / Kerameikos
Bar, club and live space at Iakhou 17 in Gazi — note the address, as the venue has not always been there. Mixed programme of gigs and DJ nights, with events booked through 2026.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Acropolis
The smallest temple on the Acropolis, built around 420 BC on a bastion beside the Propylaea and dedicated to Athena as bringer of victory. It has been dismantled and rebuilt several times, most recently in a programme completed in the 2000s.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Thiseio
Doric temple of the 5th century BC on the west edge of the Ancient Agora, the most completely preserved Greek temple standing. Its survival is owed to its use as a Christian church for roughly a thousand years; it gave the surrounding Thiseio district its name.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Plaka
A colossal Corinthian temple begun in the 6th century BC and completed under Hadrian in AD 131, after roughly 638 years of interrupted building. Of its original 104 columns, sixteen survive and fifteen are still standing; one fell in a storm in 1852 and lies where it landed.
Nachtleben · Monastiraki
Three-floor all-day cocktail bar at Praxitelous 30, opened in 2014 by Nikos Bakoulis and Vasilis Kyritsis. On the World's 50 Best Bars list every year since 2015 and placed 30th in Europe's 50 Best Bars 2026. Coffee and food by day, cocktails until late.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Makrygianni
The theatre on the south slope of the Acropolis where the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and Aristophanes were first staged at the City Dionysia. In its 4th-century BC form it held up to about 25,000 people; it is entered on the Acropolis slopes ticket.

Stadtteile · Thiseio
A low-rise neighbourhood west of the Acropolis, defined by the pedestrianised Apostolou Pavlou promenade running past the Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus. Cafés line the promenade and the Hill of the Nymphs with the National Observatory sits directly above it; quieter and less commercial than neighbouring Monastiraki.

Tipping is welcomed but not expected at North American levels. Many restaurants already add a service charge of roughly 5–13%, in which case nothing further is needed; where none is added, 5–15% is the usual range and rounding up is entirely normal. Taxis are rounded to the nearest euro, with €1–2 if the driver handles luggage. Cash tips are safer than card tips, which do not always reach staff.
Essen & Trinken · Psyri
Koulouri bakery at Karaiskaki 23 in Psyri, producing since 1960 and running around the clock, so there is warm sesame bread at any hour. Several flours and variations, plus other baked goods; it also supplies stalls across the city.
Essen & Trinken · Pagrati
Mezedopoleio on the corner of Arrianou and Polemonos in Pagrati, open since 2012 under the Press Café team. Small plates of Greek and Mediterranean cooking; it fills up, so book. Listed at Arrianou 31 and 33 — the two numbers are the same operation.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Plaka
An octagonal marble timekeeping tower of about 50 BC inside the Roman Agora, fitted with sundials on each face and a water clock inside. Each side carries a relief of one of the eight winds; it is one of very few classical buildings still standing largely intact.
Essen & Trinken · Peristeri
Fish taverna at Agiou Pavlou 33 in Peristeri, west of the centre and nowhere near the sea — it is a neighbourhood psarotaverna, not a seaside one. Refurbished in recent years away from its old nautical decor. Reachable by metro plus a walk; not a stroll from Syntagma.
Essen & Trinken · Mikrolimano, Piraeus
Lefteris Lazarou's seafood restaurant on the Mikrolimano harbour front in Piraeus, the current home of a kitchen he started in 1987. It held a Michelin star for many years but was moved to the guide's main selection in the 2024 Greek edition. Lunch through late evening.

Several cook-houses and ouzeri operate inside and in the surrounding arcades.

The city's covered central food market, created by the municipality in 1878 and opened in 1886, occupying the block bounded by Athinas, Sofokleous, Evripidou and Aiolou streets at Athinas 42. Tagesausflüge · East Attica
The sanctuary of Artemis on Attica's east coast, about 24.5 km south-east of Athens near Markopoulo, set in an inlet that has silted up since antiquity. The 6th-century BC temple was rebuilt in the 420s BC, and a Π-shaped stoa holds nine dining rooms with couch cuttings still visible; a classical stone bridge on the site is the only known Greek example of its period. Young Athenian girls served here as arktoi, 'she-bears', in the quadrennial Arkteia rites, and the museum 330 m away displays their votives.

Museen · Kolonaki
The military museum of the Greek armed forces, opened in 1975 at Vasilissis Sofias and Rizari 2, next to Evangelismos metro. Its floors run from antiquity to the 20th century, and aircraft and artillery are displayed in the forecourt.
Praktisches · Attica
Civil Protection publishes a daily fire-risk map for Greece. At category 4 (very high) national parks and forest trails close and forest access is banned; at category 5 forests are sealed, municipalities go on evacuation standby and organised excursions are cancelled. Attica hit these levels repeatedly through summer 2026 — on 12 August 2026 even Lycabettus Hill was closed to visitors and vehicles from midnight. Check the daily map before planning Parnitha, Hymettus or Sounio, and expect 112 alerts by SMS if a fire starts nearby.

One of four 24-hour airport express lines: X95 to Syntagma, X96 to Piraeus port, X93 to the Kifissos and Liosion intercity bus stations, X97 to Elliniko metro station (night departures from Dafni). The fare is €5.50 full, €2.70 reduced, and contactless bank cards or phones work at the on-board validator. OASA estimates X95 at about 60 minutes, though daytime traffic on Vasilissis Sofias regularly pushes it to 90; it is the only option when the metro is not running.

Antike Stätten & Denkmäler · Syntagma
A neoclassical hall built 1874–1888 to designs by Theophil Hansen, financed by Evangelos and Konstantinos Zappas, at the south end of the National Gardens.
