Ydria Pottery Workshop, Koumaradei

Koumaradei, on the southern slopes of Mount Ambelos, is the island's pottery village along with neighbouring Mavratzei. At the Ydria workshop, run by potter Timos Hatzilagos, traditional Samian shapes are thrown by hand alongside the famous Pythagorean cup, which empties itself if you fill it past the line; he also works in raku on sculptures and one-off pieces. It is one of the few stops that works in the rain, and children tend to stand transfixed at the wheel.
