Mount Ambelos (Karvounis) – Profitis Ilias summit

Ambelos, known locally as Karvounis, is the ridge that divides the north of the island from the south, topped by Profitis Ilias at 1,150 m. Route 24 climbs from Pandrosos on the southern side, 6.3 km with 709 m of ascent through pines and mountain vineyards. Pandrosos itself, at about 600 m, is the highest village on Samos. The summit gives a view over the whole of Samos and across to the Turkish coast. Strong walkers can carry on north-east to Lazaros peak (1,025 m) and, on route 23, descend all the way to Kokkari.
