The breakwater Herodotus called one of the three greatest Greek engineering works — still in use today.
About
Herodotus listed the mole of Samos alongside the Eupalinos tunnel and the temple of Hera as the three greatest works of the Greeks: more than two stades out to sea (over 400 metres), in twenty fathoms of water. Underwater survey between 1988 and 1996 measured it at 480 metres. The 19th-century breakwater you see today sits directly on the ancient one, so the harbour where fishing boats now tie up is the same one that sheltered Polycrates' fleet. Walk out to the end of it, best at sunset.
