Tunnel of Eupalinos
Photo: Moumouza at English Wikipedia · Public domain
A 6th-century BC aqueduct dug from both ends of the mountain at once, meeting almost perfectly in the middle.
About
Eupalinos of Megara drove a 1,036 m tunnel straight through Mount Kastro to bring spring water from Agiades into the ancient city under the tyrant Polycrates. Two crews dug from opposite ends and met in the middle with astonishing accuracy — it is the second tunnel known to have been dug from both ends, and the first to manage it by a geometric method. Today you walk inside it with a helmet, cool and dim, above the channel that once carried the water. Different itineraries take you progressively deeper.
