Pythagoreio's picturesque harbour, on the site of Polycrates' ancient port, inside a UNESCO World Heritage site.
About
Pythagoreio stands on top of the ancient city of Samos. The present harbour was built in 1859-1866 on exactly the site of the ancient one, considered the oldest man-made port in the Mediterranean and the base of Samian sea power under Polycrates. The quay is lined with fish tavernas, cafes and yachts, with the statue of Pythagoras at one end and the castle of Lykourgos Logothetis, built in 1824-1827, on the western side above the water. Together with the Heraion, Pythagoreion is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The light is best in the hour before sunset.
