About
In 1824 Lykourgos Logothetis refortified the abandoned castle of Pythagoreio and rebuilt this tower-house on one of the towers of the earlier Byzantine castle — its oldest phase goes back to the 10th century — on the rock of the ancient acropolis. From here he governed the island through the revolution against the Ottomans. Beside it stands the church of the Transfiguration, built after the naval victory at Mycale in August 1824, with the statue of Logothetis in its courtyard; on 6 August the castle is lit with votive candles for the feast of the Transfiguration. The restored tower now houses a small exhibition on Logothetis and on Byzantine Samos. The walk up from the waterfront takes ten minutes; come half an hour before sunset, when the light rakes across the stone, then head back down for an ouzo on the harbour.
