Agia Zoni Monastery
A 1695 monastery at Vlamari, minutes outside Vathy, with 17th-century wall paintings.
About
Built in 1695 by the monk Meletios at Vlamari, a few minutes outside Vathy. The church is a barrel-vaulted domed basilica, and the cells wrap around it like a wall - the way monasteries were built here for protection against pirate raids. Inside are 17th-century wall paintings, a carved iconostasis of 1801 with biblical scenes and a large silver-plated icon of Agia Zoni made in 1819. The complex was renovated in 2013 and two monks live here. It is the easiest monastery to fit in if you are staying in Vathy.
