Profitis Ilias Monastery
A quiet 1625 monastery in the hills above Karlovasi, home to a single monk.
About
Founded in 1625 by two monks, on a church given to them by Nikolaos Iakomou, a benefactor from Karlovasi. The present church, a single-aisled barrel-vaulted basilica with a dome, was built in 1739 and stands at around 150 m overlooking the Karlovasi plain. Its carved iconostasis was made by craftsmen from Chios, and a silver-plated icon of the Prophet Elijah dated 1804 is the other thing to look for. It is among the quietest monasteries on Samos - one monk lives here, and he will usually let you in himself. The feast day is 20 July.
