Zoodochos Pigi Monastery
A convent high above Kamara, with a sweeping view across to Cape Mykale and the Turkish coast.
About
Founded in 1756 by the hieromonk Dorotheos on the ridge northeast of Vathy, more than 300 m above Kamara; the rebuilding of the old chapel was finished in 1782. The domed Byzantine-style church rests on four columns that tradition says were brought over from the ancient temple at Miletus. It has been a convent since 2002, and the nuns work mainly at icon painting. The courtyard looks straight across the strait to Asia Minor and Cape Mykale. The feast day is the Friday after Easter.
