Before the town spread around the harbour, Vathy was up here, out of reach of pirates. The 17th-century settlement survives almost intact: steep cobbled lanes, small tile-roofed houses with wooden bay windows, chapels and shaded corners. It was from here that people came down to build the modern town below. It is one of the best walks on Samos, especially late in the day when the view opens over the bay.
