The oldest quarter of Karlovasi: stone houses, half-ruined mansions and the church of Agia Triada on the hilltop.
About
Palaio Karlovasi is the original settlement here, growing from the mid-16th century and tucked into the hills so it could not be seen from the sea by pirates. It splits into two neighbourhoods, Akamatra to the east and Galatas to the west, with stone houses, gardens and flagstone lanes, a good number of them now in ruins. On the hilltop at 120m, the church of Agia Triada, built in 1824, dominates the whole of Karlovasi, and the climb is repaid with a view across to the coast of Asia Minor.
