Karlovasi Tannery Museum
Greece's only tannery museum, inside a restored leather works in Karlovasi's Tabakika quarter.
About
From 1880 to 1930 Karlovasi lived off leather: in the Rivas district more than fifty tanneries worked with some 300 workers, and hides made up around 12% of the whole island's exports. The museum opened in 2009 in the restored early-20th-century Talampekos-Sinadinos works and is run by the Municipality of West Samos, with machinery, tools, cured hides, a rich photographic archive and a map of where every tannery once stood. Afterwards walk the Tabakika quarter down to the shore — the empty stone shells of the factories still stand in a row along the water.
