Vigla (1,433 m), the highest peak on Samos: a hard 9.4 km climb from Votsalakia past the Evangelistria monastery.
About
Vigla, at 1,433 m, is the highest point on Samos and the second highest peak in the whole East Aegean after Fengari on Samothrace. Route 9 of the Samos Hikes network starts at Votsalakia, climbs through pine forest and passes the Evangelistria monastery, where there is water. Above the monastery the ground turns bare and rocky with no shade at all, for a total ascent of about 1,600 m. Start at first light, carry plenty of water and sun protection; most walkers return the same way. A 4WD track lets you drive the first 4 km and begin at 450 m if you want to shorten it.
